The Royalettes “It’s Gonna Take A Miracle” (MGM 13366, R&B#28, Pop#41, 1965)
One of the prettiest, and oft covered songs of the classic girl group era is this aching, arching ballad that was The Royalettes biggest hit. Even then it barely missed the Top 40, being a major hit on the East Coast, but more sporadically a hit west of The continental divide. It would go on to many covers, from Laura Nyro, The Shirelles and many others before becoming a Top Ten hit for Deniece Williams in 1982.
As I was driving home from North Berkeley tonight, it came on the radio, and with the clear moon and sky, and the cool breeze coming through my window, it made me think about how intensely beautiful little moments can be, even to a remarkably heartbreaking song. And I was reminded why this is my 4th favorite song of all time, the incredible ache for things to go right on my mind, and smiling and shedding a tear at life at the same time.
Thanks Sheila Ross, Teddy Randazzo, and life in general.
