James Brown in Boston Garden on April 5, 1968.
The day after MLK was assasinated riots ripped through more than 100 US cities. But not Boston. The city cannily aired Brown’s concert live (against Brown’s wishes – he didn’t want the city giving it away for free). But that’s Brown the businessman. This is Brown the artist, at the towering peak of his powers. Simply an astonishing perdformance.
The concert was introduced by Mayor Kevin White, who literally begs his city to keep the peace. This is an absolutely amazing document – I wrote about it for Newsweek in 2008. Bookmark it and watch the whole thing.
